About Shani

I’m a Washington, D.C.-based journalist who is currently working as the associate editor of CampusProgress.org and the Washington correspondent for Colorlines magazine. Prior to that, I worked at Princeton University in the Office of Communications.

This space is where I talk about technology, music, television, movies, books, journalism, ladybusiness, and whatever else crosses my mind. Elsewhere, I frequently write about culture, gender, feminism, race, Washington, D.C., and a host of other things. My writing has appeared in Washington City Paper, The American Prospect, TheAtlantic.com, The Root, and other publications. I blog occasionally at PostBourgie.

I’m a graduate of Howard University, where I majored in journalism and political science. I grew up in Southern and Northern California, inland (nowhere near the cool parts of the state, though we did have an asparagus festival). When I’m not reading the internet or editing and writing, I’m watching movies on Netflix, reading YA novels, cooking, or hanging out with my 4-year-old brindle greyhound, Scarlett O. Hilton.

So I was reading this article on yahoo about the washington post article with a picture of an oakland police officer petting a cat, and they featured a few comments made by bloggers and I saw your name and thought, “Whoa, I think I know that chick!” Our parents worked together at UOP, my mom is Dr. Heather Knight (or Mayne back then, can’t remember). I like your shot out to the Asparagus Fest, haha. Glad to know you’re doing well for yourself!
