The Pay is Certain, One Way or Another

There is a dearth of James Taylor videos on Youtube. If I could find it, today I would post a video for Taylor’s “Love Has Brought Me Around,” which is the opener of one of my favorite albums ever, Mudslide Slim and The Blue Horizon. But as there is not, here’s some Whitman, who I happen to think is the closest thing JT has to an artistic ancestor. From Leaves of Grass, “Sometimes With One I Love“:

SOMETIMES with one I love, I fill myself with rage, for fear I effuse unreturn’d love;

But now I think there is no unreturn’d love—the pay is certain, one way or another;

(I loved a certain person ardently, and my love was not return’d;

Yet out of that, I have written these songs.)

Happy Valentine’s Day.
